Trips to the lesser known parts of Southern Africa


I prefer remote areas, away from the crowds, with peaceful nights.

The suggestions below concentrate on the Tanqua Karoo, but I have travelled widely and could offer trips to other areas, making sure visitors are well prepared and do not get lost.

The Seven Passes Trip (approximately 700km with detours in the Tankwa Karoo National Park)

This 5 day, 4 night trip will take you over the Theronsberg Pass, Marigold Heights, Ouberg Pass, Gannaga Pass, Skitterykloof Pass, Katbakkies Pass and Gydo Pass.
This trip can be completed in your 4x4's, 2x4 bakkies (pick-ups), Combi's and Toyota Ventures, although some of the passes can become real challenges after heavy rain falls)
You need to be self-sufficient for 5 days (basic foodstuffs and petrol/diesel can be bought in Middelpos).

Middelpos Quickie (± 500km) Tour

For those of you who do not have much time but would still like to have an introduction to the Tanqua Karoo.
Leave Ceres in the morning. Travel to Middelpos, via Ouberg Pass. Stay at the Middelpos Hotel. The next morning travel back to Ceres via Gannaga Pass. Arrive in Ceres late afternoon.

Circular day trip from Ceres over Katbakkies Pass

After you have had your breakfast at your hotel or B&B, this 200km trip will take you from Ceres over Gydo Pass, through a part of the Koue Bokkeveld, over the Katbakkies Pass, down Skittery Kloof Pass into the Ceres Karoo, down the Theronsberg Pass and back to Ceres by late afternoon. Have lunch half-way at the base of Skitterykloof.
